“He’s going to be okay.”

Braden Zimmer heard the words Owen spoke, but he wasn’t sure if he believed him. If he believed that any of them would be okay until the enemy among them was caught.

“Thanks,” was all he replied before clicking off his cell phone.

He hadn’t gone to the hospital like the rest of the team had, and guilt weighed heavily on him. But he felt the guiltiest that the accident had happened at all—that the accidents kept happening and he hadn’t been able to stop them. Somebody kept deliberately sabotaging equipment, sabotaging the team.

Who the hell was it?

He’d received a note several months ago that had warned him that somebody on his team wasn’t who he or she seemed. But who? It had to be the same person who kept trying to hurt them. He didn’t want to believe that because he’d always thought his team was so close that they were more like family than co-workers.

“It was sabotage,” Patrick “Trick” McRooney confirmed as he straightened up from behind the stove. He’d pulled the damaged appliance away from the blackened concrete block wall behind it and wedged his big body into the space. “Somebody messed with the gas line.”

Like Braden, Trick had stayed behind at the firehouse to investigate instead of going to the hospital. But Braden had had to order him to stay. Trick would have rather gone with his fallen teammate. His face was flushed with anger and frustration, nearly as deep a red as his auburn hair. “Ethan could have been killed.”

“You heard Owen,” Braden reiterated. He’d had his cell on speaker. “He’s going to be fine.”

“Now,” Trick said. “But if these damn incidents keep happening, somebody’s going to get seriously hurt or worse.”

Trick had had a close call himself recently and not just with their saboteur. A former friend of Braden’s wife, Trick’s sister, had tried to kill Trick and Henrietta Rowlins. Colleen had tried to kill Trick for never returning her affection and Henrietta because she’d become her romantic rival for the man Colleen had always wanted.

The most dangerous things that had happened to Braden’s team had been the actions of people like Colleen and the late Dirk Brown’s wife and the deranged state trooper Martin Gingrich and the Northern Lakes arsonist.

Fortunately, those people had all been caught. The saboteur had proven to be much more elusive than them. But he or she was becoming just as dangerous.

They had to find the saboteur and stop this evil before the accidents got even more serious and someone else died.
